The Belize Sailing Association organized its 8th Annual National Championship competition in 8th and 9th of September. It was hosted by CCCSC (Caye Caulker Community Sailing Club) and supported by the village council of Caye Caulker. The onlookers and enthusiasts experienced 2 days of sailing from Laser and Optimist Class Boats on Caribbean Sea towards the eastern side of Palapa Gardens.
As far as the weather condition is concerned, the winds were at 9 knots, varying between 100 to 110 degrees. The National Championship in Laser and Optimist classes were set for grabs. In addition, all year round score of 4 of the series for Laser and Optimist was finished which provided the annual top sailing champions with each class of boat.
There were 13 sailors from the Optimist class taking part which included CCCSC, Corozal Bay Sailing Club, Ladyville Sailing Club and Placencia Sailing Club with their supporters and coaches. Post completion of sailing on the 1st day, Peter Joo from PSC was leading as he won all 3 races and the 2nd position was achieved by Adya Tech of CBSC who finished races within 3 seconds.
On the 2nd day, it was a great sight as girl power took the lead and Adya Tech from CBSC won all races and there was a tie between Peter Joo and Adya Tech. However, the same was broken in Adya’s favor based on her last race’s position.
As a result, Adya Tech from Corozal Bay Sailing Club bagged 1st position and became the Optimist Champ. Peter Joo from PSC was 2nd, Abner Lopez from PSC achieved 3rd place. Trent Hardwick led all 6 races in the Laser Championship race for 2 days of racing. Towards the end, Hardwick from LSC achieved 1st place, Devaughn Morrison achieved 2nd place and 3rd place bagged by Nigel Rosado from CBSC. The sailing event was a grand success and it was mainly due to great efforts put in by Caye Caulker Community Sailing Club.
