The validity period of the eTA

Normally, Canada ETA, because Canada is written as Canada in English / French, ie in the local language) is valid for five years. This period begins when the grant takes place. However, the validity period may end sooner for two reasons:

If the passport used in the eTA application expires, the validity of the eTA will also expire. If you’re traveling to Canada with a new passport, you’ll need to apply for a new Canada ETA.

The Canadian border authorities are entitled to revoke the validity of eTA if they suspect that you no longer meet the criteria of eTA. The border authorities do not have to give a reason for this.

How often can you travel to Canada with an ETA?

eTA Canada is valid within the aforementioned period of validity for an unlimited number of trips to Canada. The application form will ask questions about the first trip you make to Canada and, among other things, ask for your arrival date. However, this does not mean that you have to submit this information before each new trip. Even if the next trip has a different purpose, you do not need to submit a new eTA application.

How long can you live in Canada with an ETA?

The maximum length of stay in Canada with an ETA: 6 months

With a valid eTA, you can not stay more than six consecutive months after entering Canada. Canadian Immigration Authorities, however, may decide upon your arrival in Canada that you may not stay in Canada for six months, but only for a shorter period of time. This only happens on a case-by-case basis, especially if the Canadian authorities suspect that you do not have sufficient funds to finance a six-month stay in Canada.

For which travel purposes the eTA is suitable

An ETA is sufficient for the following travel purposes::

  • Holiday in Canada (Tourism)
  • Visit with friends or relatives
  • Business trip / and under certain circumstances work in Canada
  • Study or school visit

Special criteria apply to work in Canada with an ETA. Read more about our work in Canada. Only if they stay in Canada (including study) lasts less than six months, you can use the eTA, without you need a special visa Canada for study/study visit. Read more about this on our page about studying/attending school in Canada.

Can an extension be requested for eTA Canada?

An issued eTA cannot be renewed. You can, however, apply for a new ETA. You will then receive a new entry permit, which in turn is valid for 5 years.
